Philanthropist Vikram Sodhi Finances the Creation of a Research Ecosystem Bridging Academic Talent Between India and Colombia

The prestigious Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur has inaugurated the Vikram Sodhi Center of Excellence. This ambitious project has been made possible through a donation of 15 million rupees (approximately $1.8 million USD) by philanthropist and investor Vikram Sodhi. With this contribution, Mr. Sodhi aims to lead the transition from traditional mining toward an industry driven by applied artificial intelligence.

Under Vikram Sodhi’s personal vision, this center is projected as an institutional bridge designed to foster global knowledge exchange.

The “Circular Impact”: A Link with Colombian Universities

The fundamental objective is to integrate the talent and geological context of Colombian universities into this ecosystem. Through this commitment, the foundation seeks to generate a “circular impact” where the cutting-edge knowledge in AI developed in India is transferable and applicable to Colombia’s mining challenges, thereby strengthening professional and academic development within the country.

From Periodic Reports to Real-Time Intelligence

The core of the center lies in its capacity to transform the mining industry through an advanced environmental intelligence infrastructure. The program will specialize in ESG analytics, developing continuous monitoring systems for:

    • Water quality and dust suppression in mining operations.

    • Slope stability and safety in tailings facilities.

    • Impact on biodiversity and carbon intensity per processed ton.

A Tribute to Excellence and Family Legacy

Beyond technical innovation, the creation of this space serves as a tribute to the legacy of the Sodhi family and its historical connection to academic excellence.

Named in honor of his family’s ties to the institution (specifically Colonel Manjeet Sodhi, a distinguished alumnus of the class of 1977), the center has been conceived by Vikram Sodhi as an “enduring institution” destined to create value through rigorous and applied research.
