School Beekeeping and Environmental Education in Antioquia

In the rural district of Santa Isabel, Remedios, we are celebrating an achievement that combines education, sustainability, and teamwork: the first honey harvest from our Apiary School.
This initiative, developed by Fundación Quintana, the Colombian subsidiary of The Sodhi Foundation, was created to raise awareness among students, teachers, and families about the vital role of bees in ecosystems and their importance in food security.
A Sweet and Transformative Learning Experience
Located on the grounds of IER Pablo VI, our 10 hives have yielded over 40 kilograms of honey. But beyond the product itself, this harvest represents a hands-on learning process where participants gain knowledge about bee biology, conservation, and responsible beekeeping.
As one teacher shared:
“We have learned firsthand about the importance of bees in ecosystems and experienced the entire honey production and harvesting process. It’s a motivating and meaningful experience for students.”
Environmental Education as a Driver of Change
At our Apiary School, every honeycomb is a living lesson in cooperation and respect for nature. Students take part in every stage—from observing the hives to extracting the honey—developing a lasting connection with the environment.
With this first harvest, we reaffirm our commitment to making this project a regional model for environmental education and school-based beekeeping in Northeast Antioquia. At The Sodhi Foundation and Fundación Quintana, we believe that planting environmental awareness in childhood is the key to building more sustainable communities and a brighter future.
